Mixed Couples by James Prideaux
Directed by Zeinab Ghais
February 10-12 & 16-18, 2023

“Love is complicated.” At least that certainly seems to be the thrust of the conversation between two couples who share a certain “history” with one another in the upcoming play entitled “Mixed Couples.” Two couples find themselves forced into a conversation with one another as they wait for the fog to lift. As they do, the fog of time begins to lift on the relationships they shared with one another 25 years ago. “It’s not easy for a man to see what a woman sees in another man,” reflects one of the characters looking back in time. “Well, you get as good as you give.” The ensemble cast of four main characters engages in a fast repartee with one another which is interrupted occasionally by the pilot of the grounded airplane. “I just want this damn fog to lift so we can go up in the airplane and be killed.” Set in the late 1920s, the show features an Elizabethan lecturer, his housekeeper wife, a past-her-prime actress, and her real estate developing husband. Their shared pasts form the basis for bitingly satiric comedy.

The Red Velvet Cake War by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, Jamie Wooten
Directed by Daran Norris
April 21-23 & 27-29, 2023

In this funny Southern-fried comedy, the three Verdeen cousins—Gaynelle, Peaches, and Jimmie Wyvette—could not have picked a worse time to throw their family reunion. Their outrageous antics have delighted local gossips in the small town of Sweetgum and the eyes of Texas are upon them, as their Aunt LaMerle is quick to point out. Having “accidentally” crashed her minivan through the bedroom wall of her husband’s girlfriend’s doublewide, Gaynelle is one frazzled nerve away from a spectacular meltdown.

After a local woman is murdered, the guests and staff at Monkswell Manor find themselves stranded during a snowstorm. It soon becomes clear that the killer is among them, and the seven strangers grow increasingly suspicious of one another. A police detective, arriving on skis, interrogates the suspects: the newlyweds running the house; a spinster with a curious background; an architect who seems better equipped to be a chef; a retired Army major; a strange little man who claims his car has overturned in a drift; and a jurist who makes life miserable for everyone. When a second murder takes place, tensions and fears escalate.
